Nurse Honor Guard
The Nurse Honor Guard recognizes nurses who died at their funerals or memorial services. Compared to a military tribute, the ceremony releases nurses from their nursing duties (Final Call to duty). Nurses of the Guard wear what was traditional dress: white uniforms, capes, and caps.
Dixon School of Nursing
The Dixon School of Nursing has graduated more than 4000 nurses since its establishment in 1915. The school closed in 2017 following the graduation of the evening/weekend classes.
LICHSON – Long Island College Hospital School of Nursing
The Long Island College Hospital was founded in 1853. In 1860 introduced bedside teaching but it wasn’t until 1883 that the School of Nursing opened. The school enjoyed a long tradition of educating nurses for 130 years before the last graduation in May, 2013 when the school closed.
US Cadet Nurse Corp Uniform
The Museum of Nursing History has in its collection the Cadet Nurse uniform worn and donated by Evelyn Benson, MPH, RN, a graduate of Jewish Hospital in Philadelphia.
Miss Alice Fisher & the Blockley Nurse
In 1884, the Board of the Poor in Philadelphia was seeking a suitable person to start a Training School for Nurses in the former Philadelphia Almshouse and Hospital known as Old Blockley. Miss Florence Nightingale recommended a former student, Miss Alice Fisher.
Mary Louise Roberts
1st Lt. Mary Louise Roberts, a World War II Army nurse, was the first female in the history of the United States Army to be awarded the Silver Star. The Silver Star is awarded for bravery, courage, and service above and beyond the call of duty.
Clara Barton, American Red Cross: Serving the Public for 140 Years
On May 21, 1881, Clara Harlow Barton attended the first meeting focused on what would become the American Red Cross Society.
